Design, Analysis and Fabrication of a Suspension System for a Formula Type Race Car

ABSTRACT: In a race car various vehicle dynamics process parameters control the handling of the car which in turn affects the performance of the car. In regard to this a good suspension system controls the various vehicle dynamics parameters that affect the effective handling of the car. The main objective of this project is to design, Analyze and fabricate an economical yet effective suspension system for a formula type autocross race car. Care has been taken to keep the weight of the suspension system minimal and other parameters related to vehicle dynamics for the design and fabrication to meet the practical yet important outlines that defines the effective functioning of the system as defined by SAE. Design, simulation and analysis have been carried out in MSC ADAMS CAR, CATIA and ANSYS software’s respectively. After fabrication, assembly and installation of the various components the car was tested on road conditions. The performance was found to be within the safe and desired limits.

Design, Analysis and Fabrication of a Steering system, Braking system, Upright and Bodywork for a Formula Type Race Car

ABSTRACT: In a race car, handling plays a key role in the performance of the vehicle. A good suspension, steering and braking system controls the effective handling of the car. Effective braking system leads to better stopping of the car and optimum energy dissipation in the process. Rack and Pinion steering system was opted and Analysis was carried out for the rack and pinion system and its relevant parameters and the graphs were plotted. Brake rotor and the caliper were designed, thermal and stress analysis was carried out. Dual circuit master cylinder was implemented to make it fail safe. Upright was designed and analyzed for the loads acting on it, which acts as the load carrying member for steering rod, A-arms, suspension, etc. FRP was selected for the body work of the car owing to its high strength to weight ratio, resistance to deformation and corrosion.

Design, Analysis and Fabrication of a Chassis and Impact attenuator for a Formula type Race Car

ABSTRACT: Chassis is an indispensable structure of an automobile, especially in a racing car. Good designs allow a light, stiff and extremely safe chassis to be produced at a reasonable manufacturing cost. A design model of the chassis was prepared using CATIA according to the guidelines provided by SAE. Many design iterations were run in order to determine the best combination of vehicle mass, component packaging, ergonomics and weight distribution while still ensuring driver safety without any compromise. During the FEA tests, Stress distributions, displacements, frequency nodes were analyzed and the results were found satisfactory. Based on the analytic results, the chassis was optimized accordingly and then fabricated. Impact attenuator plays a vital role in vehicle safety, when mounted on the front bulkhead of the vehicle. The structure of the impact attenuator was designed according to the SAE guidelines. The crash simulation of the impact attenuator was carried out in the FEA tool and the results were found satisfactory. Thus Impact attenuator was fabricated.

Subsystems of TRR!

Team Rudra Racing comprises of a group of Race enthusiasts whose main objective was to design, simulate and fabricate an innovative and economical formula style autocross racing car. The objective was achieved by creating three different groups.
  1. ·     Design, analysis and Fabrication of Chassis and the Impact Attenuator,
  2. ·         Design, analysis and Fabrication of Suspension system,
  3. ·         Design, analysis and Fabrication of steering, braking, upright and Bodywork.

The car was designed, analyzed & fabricated successfully by the combined efforts of all the groups and the car was “Ready to race”.

Who we are??

Team Rudra Racing, the SAE collegiate club of NMIT which is composed of 12 students from the final year batch of Mechanical Engineering at the Institute, has built a Student Formula car in just 40 days.
This Student Formula Car, which cost Rs. 3 lakhs to build has been designed and fabricated in compliance with the FSAE rules and guidelines, and has also been tested under the standard testing conditions.  It has a unique but simple camber and toe adjustment mechanism, and suspension pre-load adjustment for all four wheels. The Ride Height Adjuster has three levels of adjustment, considering the track conditions, comfort and safety of the driver.

The car has been designed for a gross weight of 400kg considering the driver, which provides a high power to weight ratio making it ideal for racing. This was achieved through the design, analysis and fabrication of a tubular space-frame chassis. An independent double wish-bone suspension system of unequal length A-Arms was designed and analyzed through Multi Body Dynamics tools and later fabricated. Quick release mechanism was adopted for the steering system. The car was tested on ideal road conditions and the performance was found in compliance with the SAE Standards.
